Speaker Şentop was born in 1968 in Tekirdağ. He graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Law and received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in the field of Public Law from Marmara University.

He started his academic career at Marmara University, Faculty of Law as research assistant in 1993. After completing his Ph.D. in 2002, he became Associate Professor in 2005 and Professor in 2011. Apart from Marmara University, he gave undergraduate and postgraduate lectures in various universities. He assumed several administrative responsibilities in Marmara University. Beginning from university years, he functioned as a writer and/or editor in various journals and was a member of editorial boards of many academic journals and editor of refereed journals.

Speaker Şentop served as the Chairman of Istanbul Branch of Economic and Social Research Center (ESAM). He was elected as the member of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Central Decision-Making and Administrative Committee (CDAC) at the 4th and 5th Party Congresses. He served as the Deputy Chairman of AK Party from 2012 to 2015.

He was elected as Member of Parliament from Istanbul in the 24th and 25th legislative terms. He served as the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on the Constitution and represented AK Party at the Reconciliation Committee on Constitution. He also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye in the 27th legislative term.

He was elected as the 29th Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (GNAT) on February 24, 2019 and reelected for his second term on July 7, 2020.

Speaker Şentop is fluent in English and Arabic.

He is married with four children.
