SPEAKER ŞENTOP’S REACTION TO GERMANY REGARDING “SEVİM DAĞDELEN”…


Prof. Dr. Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the GNAT expressed his reaction against Sevim Dağdelen’s election as the Chairperson of Germany-Turkey Interparliamentary Friendship Group, who is known for her support to PKK, to Hans-Peter Friedrich, Deputy Speaker of the German Bundestag whom he met with during the 4th Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments held in Nur Sultan, the capital city of Kazakhstan. 24.09.2019

Speaker Şentop stated that, “It is not possible for Sevim Dağdelen to make contributions to our relations because of her direct and openly support to the terrorist organization PKK. Dağdelen even demands PKK to be removed from the terrorist organizations list in Germany.”

In the meeting, Speaker Mustafa Şentop pointed out that interparliamentary relations were not at the desired level, although there is extensive cooperation with Germany in other fields.

Şentop criticised Sevim Dağdelen’s election as the Chairperson of Germany-Turkey Interparliamentary Friendship Group, which drew the reaction of Turkey and the Turkish public due to her support to PKK. Speaker Şentop stated the following:

“According to us, Sevim Dağdelen’s election has been a rather unfortunate development. There is no doubt that it is up to the Federal Assembly to decide which member of parliament would be elected as Chairperson. However, those who have been chosen should have the ability to communicate with their counterparts. It is not possible for Sevim Dağdelen to make contributions to our relations because of her direct and openly support to the terrorist organization PKK. Dağdelen even demands PKK to be removed from the terrorist organizations list in Germany.”

Speaker Şentop reiterated the then Speaker of the GNAT, Binali Yıldırım’s invitation to the Speaker of the Federal Assembly and invited him to visit Turkey for the purpose of accelerating interparliamentary relations.

Mustafa Şentop also mentioned increasing racism in Europe by stating, “The Turkish society living in Germany suffer from racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia. We expect solidarity from Germany, our NATO ally in the fight with terrorism.”

Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the GNAT also stated that they welcomed Germany’s recent precautions regarding PKK’s actions, “We expect Germany to show the same determination regarding the FETÖ issue”
