Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, who met with the local authorities in the Sarköy district of Tekirdağ reacted to the statements of TRNC President Mustafa Akıncı.
Şentop said, "TRNC President Mustafa Akıncı expresses himself. In fact it is a very big historical mistake for him. For a politician, his situation is the worst thing that can be considered. He is saying that he will never be Tayfur Sökmen. You know who Tayfur Sökmen is. You know that Hatay was not included in Turkey's territory after the Treaty of Lausanne that time. Hatay was under French occupation. Regarding Hatay, there is an independence struggle led by Tayfur Sökmen. This struggle was supported by Turkey then. Consequently Hatay first became an independent state. Hatay comes out of the French colony. Then a decision was taken to join Turkey. Tayfur Sökmen is the pioneer of this business. He is a prudent man, a patriot and a leader. The man who says 'I will never be Tayfur Sökmen' should have nothing in his mind about his country's territory, his homeland with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and his country's history. A man who can say this is actually a man who is not worthy of being Tayfur Sökmen.”
Speaker Mustafa Şentop, said that Turkey has no request as TRNC’s inclusion to Turkey and continued as:
“Turkey has not put forward such a thesis. But we need to know the history well. Why is there TRNC. It is not possible for young people to remember this. After the British colony ended in Cyprus, a Republic with Greek and Turkish people was established. But because the Greeks claimed to be the sole owner of the island, they did massacres because they did not want to give Turks the right to live under human conditions. When these massacres became unbearable, Turkey by using its right of guarantor, landed on the island. There Turkey created a space to protect the right to life of the Turkish people. The blood of Turks and Greeks has not been shed since 1974. The island became an island of peace and calmness.”
