Prof. Dr. Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the GNAT had a meeting in his private office with Sahibe Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, who is paying her first official visit abroad to Turkey after being elected as Speaker, 11.09.2020

Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the GNAT expressed that he is pleased to welcome Sahibe Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan and reminded that officials in Turkey and Azerbaijan pay their first international visits to each other after being elected. Şentop indicated that, "Our main approach regarding the relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan is 'two states one nation'. We are partners on each subject, we share our joy and sadness. Azerbaijan’s happiness is our happiness, its sadness is ours too. We have exercised this in various fields. Recently, mainly our President and all our ministers showed necessary reactions to Armenia because of their actions and massacres in Karabakh that pose a threat not only to Azerbaijan but to the peace in the whole region. We always support Azerbaijan in each and every platform regarding the Karabakh issue. We express this explicitly."

Şentop mentioned the recent developments in the East Mediterranean and reminded President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev’s statements supporting Turkey during his reception of the newly appointed Ambassador of Greece to Baku, Nikolaos Piperigos. Şentop emphasized that Aliyev’s statements relieved not only the officials in Turkey, but also all the Turkish people; hence, expressed his gratitude. Şentop indicated that, "The friendship between Turkey and Azerbaijan will continue to be like this forever, with care."

Sahibe Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan thanked Şentop for his hospitality and expressed that officials of both countries that come into office pay their first visits mutually.

Gafarova indicated that they feel very comfortable in Turkey and stated, "Turkey is our own motherland. This is quite normal. Because, our languages, religions, histories and cultures are one."

Gafarova pointed out Former President of Azerbaijan, Haydar Aliyev’s words of 'one nation, two states', "We have many favors in our history as one nation, two states. We must acknowledge these favors and build our future so that we can protect them. The relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey are excellent. 249 treaties have been signed between the two countries until now. These treaties cover many fields, mainly energy projects. These projects are not just important for the two countries, but also for the whole region."

Gafarova emphasized that relations between the two countries must be enhanced and stressed that the youth is the future of Azerbaijan and Turkey. Gafarova indicated that enhancing dialogue and communication between young people would enable both countries’s people’s unity.

Gafarova mentioned the attack of Armenia and expressed that mainly President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the GNAT and Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and also other officials in each and every level showed their support during this process.

Gafarova explained that President Ilham Aliyev’s words to the Ambassador of Greece to Baku were also the words of the people of Azerbaijan.

After the statements, a meeting between delegations was held.

Afterwards, Speaker Mustafa Şentop hosted a lunch in honor of Sahibe Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan. Speaker Şentop, the guest Speaker and the accompanying delegation paid a visit to the Assembly and also parts of the Assembly that were damaged during the FETÖ coup attempt on July 15th.
